Make the checks · the visit

How an online visit can work

Telehealth is care given at a distance. You might speak live or send details for a clinician to read later. Ask how you can get an answer back.

Find out who is answering

Ask for the clinician's name, role, and Florida licence or registration details. Ask whether that is the person who will make the treatment choice.

Within the Federation of State Medical Boards, the members are state bodies that license doctors.

Its guidance checked in September 2026 calls for disclosing the clinician's identity and credentials, meaning their qualifications.

Online questions need room for follow-up

In guidance current as of September 2026, the boards' group rejects treatment based only on an unchanging set of online questions. These questions stay the same whatever you answer.

An online interview that changes with your answers and allows more questions is a different kind of assessment.

The boards' group gives advice; each state's law sets the rules a clinician must obey.

If a service uses only a set list of questions, ask how the clinician can get more details. Ask how you can raise your own questions before treatment.

Selecting a drug is not the assessment

As of September 2026, the boards' group says letting a patient pick a drug from a list, without assessing their health, is not proper care.

Standard of care means the level of care expected from a health professional.

Ask what the clinician still needs to learn about you. Ask whether the assessment could end with a different choice or no prescription.

Ask what happens if an exam is needed

When care cannot be provided over a screen, the boards' guidance requires the clinician to organize the necessary tests or refer the patient to another professional.

Ask where that care would happen and what it would cost. Get the next step clear before treating the online visit as the whole plan.

Florida keeps the same care standard

As of September 2026, Florida requires telehealth to meet the same professional standard as care given in person.

Ask who answers medicine questions after the visit, and how you can reach them. Write the answer down.
